Need to know!Acid Reflux Disease / GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease) Over 25 million people in the U.S. suffer from heartburn and acid indigestion caused by acid reflux / GERD. It occurs when the stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus. Although most symptoms from this condition are heartburn in nature, other symptoms may include persistent hoarseness, belching, burping, occasional spitting up or vomiting, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and unintentional weight loss. In addition, chronic pulmonary problems such as coughing, wheezing, bronchitis, and asthma-like symptoms can masquerade as acid reflux / GERD delaying the diagnosis in many patients.
There are a number of treatments for acid reflux / GERD that a physician may recommend. Initially, treatments usually include change in diet, antacids, and raising the head of the bed to elevate the torso and head 6-10 inches while lying down. Raising one's head with multiple pillows is not enough to prevent GERD attacks. Acid reflux / GERD often occurs while lying down since it is easy for the stomach contents to spill into (reflux) the esophagus when both are horizontal.
